Please note: Waverley XL has been designed as an AUv3 (Audio Unit v3) instrument and does not run as a standalone app. It needs to be used inside an AUv3 compatible host such as Apple’s GarageBand or AUM shown in the screenshots.

What is Waverley XL?

Waverley XL is a sample-based instrument, or “ROMPLER”. It is not a synthesiser that allows you to create your own instruments. Instead, the instruments have already been created. You also have some additional sound-shaping options accessible via 10 parameters.

Where did the sounds come from?

The instruments have been created using a favorite virtual-analog hardware synthesizer with additional processing using its own effects engine. All the patches were designed from scratch, specifically for Waverley XL.

Is this the same as MU Waverley in moodunits?

Waverley XL uses similar sampling technology as MU Waverley but has been developed based on requests and suggestions from moodunits customers. The primary difference lies in the instruments themselves. While MU Waverley instruments are optimized for minimal space and CPU usage, Waverley XL stands out for its complexity and richness, providing a more immersive playing experience with complex, evolving sounds.

Instruments

There are currently 50 different instruments, each with 4 sets of parameter presets providing 200 patches in total. Instruments are categorized as “sustained”, “keyed”, “lead”, or “departures”. Sustained instruments hold notes until you release a key, while keyed instruments offer a natural decay akin to a piano. Lead sounds are monophonic with gentle legato glide and limited dynamic range. Departures are adventurous sonic creations meant to transport you on a unique auditory voyage.

There's also a selection of 50 “components” derived from 25 main instruments for individual sound design experiments (*).

Parameters

Waverley XL provides ten parameters for advanced sound shaping, particularly the AMP envelope and FILTER, which can drastically transform an instrument's character. If you're familiar with traditional synthesizers, these parameters should be immediately recognizable.

<li> Timbre changes based on velocity sensitivity with a 30dB dynamic range (15dB for lead sounds)</li>
<li> Pitch bend range of +/- two semitones (a whole note)</li>
<li> Modulation wheel mapped to filter cut-off (this overrides filter envelope and vice versa)</li>
<li> Lead sounds feature a fixed 100ms glide accessible through legato playing</li>
</ul>
(*) To mix and match components, multiple instances of Waverley XL need to be created within your AU host. Refer to the user guide available from the main Waverley XL app for more detailed instructions.
